The perfect file size for your site is something that needs to be discussed. You have to make sure you don’t upload an image that’s 15MB in total. This makes the loading time much longer than it should be and will slow down any website user who wants access to what they want on a page as soon as possible. 125KB isn’t too big either, but if your output is really high, then there has been some issue with how large of an area or resolution those images are at – which can affect load times considerably more, so watch out!
The optimal file size for uploading content onto a webpage should not exceed 155 kilobytes (KB). Files over 150 KB usually take up too much space and increase the amount of time required to load the page, which is unacceptable in today’s digital world. If your file exceeds 155 KB, you should consider either having a high-resolution image or reducing your file size through resizing or compression.
GIFs are helpful when images are static and don’t move. They also work well for images that contain lots of colors in them (for instance: logos and cartoons). Compression algorithms can reduce the size of a GIF without compromising its quality. The downfall to GIFs is that there are only 8-bit indexed colors.
JPEGs use lossy compression, which means they throw away data to get smaller file sizes. This makes the quality of JPEG files depend upon the degree of data loss and the amount of detail in the image. JPEGs are ideal for ideas that have lots of detail, such as photographs. Compression works by reducing the number of colors from an image but never reduces the number of bits per pixel.
PNGs are best for images that contain a lot of colors. They are also suitable for line art and text since PNGs don’t support transparency. There are two types of PNG files: 24-bit and 8-bit, making it hard to know which is optimal to use online. The dimensions of a traditional photo are 4×6, 5×7, or 8×10. But on the web, they’re measured in pixels and usually come out to 795 x 300px.
A resolution is quality or density of an image, measured in dots per inch (dpi). Most computer monitors display 72dpi or 92 dpi, so images are unnecessarily large when saved at high resolutions. When a design program has the option to “save for web,” it means keeping your work with low resolutions that will look great on any screen size and allow you to save time designing for multiple screens (desktop, mobile, and tablet).
If possible, output images with dimensions that are under 10kb in size. A great example of a 5″x7″ version of a design will require only 2.5MB while the same procedure at 16×20 inches will be nearly 1MB, and the file size on your server will increase significantly as well.
Lastly, remember to always check the resolution requirements when uploading images. If your browser or device doesn’t support how large an image can be uploaded, they won’t allow it.
