I am going to let you in on a little secret. I have been struggling with my email list lately and I don't know what's happening or how to fix it. It was getting so bad that sometimes, even when I made an effort to get responses back from my subscribers, they would just ignore me altogether!
But then someone told me about these two really awesome tricks: the first one is called “cold reply” which means sending out emails to your subscribers who haven't opened anything for awhile (or at all). The second one is something called “segmenting contacts.” And when you do those two things—cold replies and segmentation—you will finally be able to see what topics are actually working for your audience.
This article will cover how to build and maintain an email list and keep your readers engaged. Before we get started, make sure to sign up for my newsletter and get tons of tips and tricks to boost your blogging business.

What is an Email List?
An email list or an electronic mailing list is a collection of email addresses used to send subscribers content. Taking the time and effort to create an email list is well worth it. Not only is it great for marketing, but regular emails can also help nurture your relationship with your audience.
A mailing list can sometimes include other personal information, such as first names. You may decide to personalize your emails so first names would make sense to collect, in that case.
Remember only to collect information relevant to you and your business—for example, email addresses, zip code, or gender are too many unnecessary personal questions. You may open yourself up to litigation by collecting this type of information due to privacy concerns. It also does not make sense for a subscriber to list the information that is not relevant to signing up for a newsletter.
Another aspect to reflect on is time vs. value. If you ask for too much information, a potential subscriber may feel overwhelmed and decide not to sign-up for your email list. The last thing you want to do is scare away potential subscribers by asking too personal questions. So, keep it simple.
But Why Email instead of Social Media?
The humble email is often overlooked. It has been around since the Internet was born, and at a glance, it seems rather basic and perhaps a little old-school. Emails are not as flashy as Instagram or as controversial as Twitter, so social media often overshadow email. However, look closer at the stats, and you will see that email holds a significant influence.
First, almost everybody online has an email address. This makes email an effective way to connect effortlessly and gives you access to a vast audience. If you think live streaming is powerful, email marketing is a whole other beast. The reality is that for every $1 spent on email marketing, the average return is a whopping $44.25. That’s more than 40 times the initial investment for a marketing tool that is often free and relatively easy to set up!
Plus, social media platforms can be divisive. Most people prefer one over the other, depending on their online social networks. Emails are more inclusive to all types of people, and almost everyone checks their emails at least occasionally. Professionals, especially, spend a great deal of time on emails, so creating a mailing list is a great way to reach all segments of your audience.
Another perk of email is you can personalize it to your audience. Social media lets you post engaging content, but you can’t address it to a specific person at a mass scale as effortlessly as with email. Emails, on the other hand, are sent to your subscriber’s inbox. Receiving a personalized email makes it a memorable experience. People are more likely to read a message explicitly directed to them than a stream of content that is not addressed to anyone in particular.

Benefits of an email list
- Email funnels. A series of steps that you set-up to meet potential customers to make a sale. Funnels are massive leverages for emails due to the attention that your subscribers receive. Access to email allows for you to follow-up and lower the fear of commitment.
- You own your email list. It is so much easier to speak to your subscribers when you have their attention. Social media brings up barriers such as algorithms and feed sequence. With email, your subscribers can follow-up and re-read past messages and connect with you with ease.
- You establish trust. Did you know that most people will open an email because of who sent it? Yes, that is the number one predictor of which emails get opened first. When your subscriber associates your name with positive emotion and value, they will respond positively.
Meera Kothand introduced a theory about the sequence from stranger to brand advocate. “At any time, there are one of six people interacting with your brand: Stranger – Reader – Subscriber – Engaged Subscriber – Customer – Brand Advocate” (300 Email Marketing tips by Kothand, M.). Through email, you can nurture your audience to convert curious strangers into passionate brand advocates.
There is a lot of potential that comes from email. Overlooking it is one of the biggest mistakes bloggers make. Avoid making that rookie mistake by setting up a mailing list early on.
Is there any legal stuff I need to know about Collecting Email Addresses?
“The law is the lowest bar.”
-Laura Atkins, Owner of Words to the Wise
There are many things to keep in mind when collecting email addresses, and yes, that includes various legal stuff. As a blogger, you might want to rush through this bit and jump into writing content for your mailing list. I understand, the creative work is indeed the best part but keeping your blogging business safe and without disruption is key to consistently making money. At the top of the legal list is data storage.
Privacy Policy
Your privacy policy is one of the best ways to disclose to subscribers how their data will be used. Subscribers can always ask you how their data has is used. Delaying a response outside of the lawful limit could cause you unwanted stress.
Developing a privacy policy is and posting it on your website is mandatory in the united states. Not having one is fineable and can lead to a loss of revenue. For example, Google AdSense does not monetize your website if you do not have a Privacy Policy.
You can create a Privacy Policy in minutes using Website Policies. They ask you a series of questions that draft your policy in no time. Best of all is there comprehensive catalog of additional policies that you may want to purchase in a bundle for the best price.
I have all my policies with Privacy Policies and am so glad that I found a website that helped me craft the policies. Gaining the support of Privacy Policies saved me a ton of money from legal fees and hiring an attorney and saved me money and time from downloading templates.
Examples of Policies
Here is a list of current policies I have from Website Policies.
Acceptable Use Policy: This policy outlines prohibited activities and uses no spam policy and enforcement in case of infringement, and much more.
Terms and Conditions: This policy outlines intellectual property rights, limitations of liability, third-party services, and much more.
DMCA Policy: This policy contains notification of infringement, counter-notifications, and more.
Disclaimer: Outlines that protections such as not legal advice, content and posting, and more.
Cookie Policy: The cookie policy outlines what cookies are, how cookies are used, and more.
Privacy Policy: Discloses collected information, billing and payments, and more.
For more information on Privacy Policies, check out Website Policies. They can help you set up a Privacy Policy in minutes.
CAN-SPAM. It is especially important when you plan to utilize email to market. Marketing over email is regulated through the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 (CAN-SPAM). This law regulates commercial email messaging that forbids deceptive messaging and requires senders to have an unsubscribe link in every email and a quick response to opt-out requests, amongst others. CAN-SPAM varies, so be aware of your target audience and abide by law regulations.
Globalization. These days, it’s easier than ever before to get a global following. Having an international and diverse audience can be very exciting but comes with extra considerations, such as laws in other countries. Countries such as Germany have strict rules on email and email marketing. So, if your target audience is in these countries, be aware of their CAN-SPAM practices.
For more information on legalities, I encourage you to read Email Marketing Rules by Chad S. White. Speak to your attorney on any questions you may have and keep up-to-date on your state and national laws.
—Tips to create ethical and lawful mailing lists
- Include an unsubscribe link to every email
- Honor your opt-out requests immediately
- Include a mailing address in every email
- Do not use misleading subject lines
- Do not attempt to conceal your identity
- Be aware of CAN-SPAM regulations
- Never make an email opt-in mandatory
- Be mindful of the information you are collecting
Now that we have established why an email list is essential and some of the legal potholes to avoid, let’s move on to the exciting part – getting the email list up and running.
3 Essentials for Creating an Email List
- A persuasive landing page or opt-in form to collect emails.
- An email marketing service or tool to manage these email addresses
- A place to put your opt-in form (like a website or social media page)
The next section looks at the second step, the tool to manage your subscriber email addresses. Which Tool Should I Use to Manage My Email List?
Once email addresses and sign-ups come pouring in, you will have a whole lot of data to process and organize. So, be prepared. At the very beginning, even before you start collecting email addresses, make sure to have a plan on email list management and pick an email marketing service ahead of time.
There are a lot of tools you can use for email marketing. Do a quick search and a whole host of names pop up. You might find it quite difficult or overwhelming to choose the best one. My personal favorite for email list management is ConvertKit.
I’ve talked about ConvertKit before on this blog, and as you might know, it is my go-to software for landing pages. Creating a landing page is easy with ConvertKit. To manage the email addresses that you will collect from landing pages, ConvertKit is the way to go.
Build your email list and subscriber management for free with ConvertKit and link your ConvertKit form to your WordPress theme so that emails are directly linked. This way, you can keep everything in one place, perfect for staying organized.
Of course, ConvertKit has additional features such as landing pages and e-commerce space. But even without all that, its email features alone are worth it. Here are a few things that I love about ConvertKit’s email features:
- Broadcast. Let your audience know when you have a promotion.
- Subscriber Management. Identify which subscribers are interested in different pieces of your business with tagging and segmentation.
- Sequences. Pre-arrange a sequence of emails for different triggers. For example, when someone subscribes to your newsletter, they automatically get a series of emails from you.
- Automations. Some creators may opt for sending out a freebie with every newsletter sign-up instantly with pre-arrangement.
ConvertKit has a free version with basic features that supports up to 1000 subscribers. If you are just starting, this is an excellent and risk-free way to get your feet wet. The free plan includes email broadcasts.
After a while, your audience will (hopefully!) start to grow. With more subscribers, your site might benefit from the extra perks of the paid Creator Plan. The Creator Plan includes sequences and automated funnels. Whether you are on a free or paid subscription, email list building with ConvertKit is scalable and manageable. You can get an individualized quote for your ConvertKit plan based on the number of subscribers you have. Check out their pricing plans to find what works best for you.

How Do I Start Building My Email List?
There are a lot of ways you can start to build your email list. Whichever method you choose, the concept is the same. You need to collect email addresses of people who want to hear from you.
Here are a few ways to collect email addresses and gain new subscribers.
Landing Page
A landing page is an excellent place to start as you don’t need much to have a landing page. Even without a website, you can have a high converting landing page up and running. When you start, you may consider having a landing page that says something like, “coming soon.” Position the landing page URL in your social media account profiles and share the URL with friends and family who may be interested.
Your website
Once you have a reliable website going, this is a gold mine for growing your mailing list. Your website should have multiple ways for subscribers to sign-up to your newsletter email list.
6 Strategic Placements for your Form
- Top bar
- Footer
- Sidebar
- Below or in the header
- About Me page
- Resources page
Make the most of your home page. Here is an example of the home page on my site.
You’ll notice that there are five opportunities to sign-up for a newsletter on just one page.
Why?
Someone who hears about my blog is most likely to start on the home page, making it the perfect place to entice curious strangers into becoming your audience.
Opt-in form
An opt-in form is usually embedded into a blog post or on a website. Here is the opt-in form I typically use for my blog posts. If a visitor to your site landed there through a shared post or specific search result, they would have skipped the homepage. So, it is just as useful to have opt-in forms as part of each blog post.
Lead Magnet
Place your lead magnets in your blog posts too. For example, if you are talking about an editorial calendar and you have a free downloadable template. You may choose to send that freebie to people who submit their email address.
A subscription page is a dedicated page on your website that talks to potential subscribers about the benefits of joining your email list. With the number of spam emails going around these days, people may be picky about the sites they share email addresses. Having a dedicated subscription page can help a subscriber feel more confident in sharing their email address with you. You may include –
- Samples of emails that you sent out so that your subscriber knows what to expect by signing up
- Free resource library or something of value that they can expect to receive (e.g., coupons or freebies)
- A strong headline to convert to a subscriber
- Options for the subscriber to personalize their subscription, such as the frequency of emails
- Social media share buttons to encourage your audience to share the possibility of receiving your newsletter with their friends.
Facebook. Social media is an excellent way to reach folks who may not visit your website. On your Facebook business page, you can add a customized button at the top of the page. Some read “contact me” or “send us a message,” you can customize it to say “send me the newsletter.”
Tips to start building your email list
To sum it up, a high-converting opt-in form is crucial to building your email list. To put it simply, this is a box for your audience to send you their email addresses.
- Keep it simple, attractive, and persuasive.
- Remember to place your newsletter subscription form in many different places (blog posts, homepage social media, etc.) to maximize your chances of catching someone’s eye.
What is Considered a Large Email List? Plus Tips on Managing Cold Subscribers
Is it too soon to ask this?
As your email list grows larger, so does the need to maintain it. Of course, large email lists are fantastic, as it means more people want to hear from you. But a large audience is meaningless if no one is listening. The key is to create an engaged audience who want to be part of your community.
One of the most basic and crucial steps you can take is to have dependable software designed to manage large mailing lists, such as ConvertKit.At some point, you will probably upgrade to a paid plan with ConvertKit. A great time to consider a paid plan is to begin to look at analytics and balance what makes sense for your budget since pricing is partly based on the number of subscribers.
The free plan allows you to manage up to 1000 subscribers. Any more, and you will need the paid Creator plan. That said, even if you do not have 1000 subscribers, you might want to consider if the Creator plan could serve you better. The extra features offered could go a long way in improving your audience engagement, making the cost of the paid plan a long-term investment for your brand.
Once you have a reliable email list software managing your list, the next key element is to look at your stats. Since emails are sent to connect with your audience, it is essential to check if they are working as intended.
By reviewing your analytics, you can get an idea of your subscriber activity and how well your emails are doing. As your list grows larger with more email addresses, new issues might start to pop up. For example, you might notice that some of your subscribers are cold subscribers. Cold subscribers are people who have not opened your emails in months, and you continue to pay to send them emails.
Warming Up Cold Subscribers
Now, cold subscribers may be ignoring your emails, but as a content creator, you need to pay attention to them. The average mailing list is thought to have approximately 60%, cold subscribers. This is more than half of the audience, hence do not take it lightly.
ConvertKit has its specific criteria for cold subscribers. If a subscriber doesn't open any emails within 30 days of subscribing, the subscriber is classified as a cold subscriber. If a person does open an email after subscribing, the duration goes up to 90 days, and they are considered a cold subscriber if they go 90 days without engaging with your emails.
To see if you have any inactive audience, go to ConvertKit's ‘Subscribers' page and select ‘Cold Subscribers.' Those who have been ignoring your emails will be listed, and from there, you can start to brainstorm ways to warm up your cold email list and bring your audience back to life.
5 Tips to Connect with Cold Subscribers
If you had a look at your stats and saw lots of cold subscribers, don’t panic. Here is what to do about it:
1. Conduct a survey. If most of your emails are going unopened, this could mean that the content you are offering does not match what your audience is expecting. Doing a survey can be a great way to determine your relationship with your subscribers and show improvement areas you might have missed.
Ask your subscribers to tell you the kinds of emails that they love receiving. You can create more desirable content that people want to read instead of spending time on emails that no one opens. Include a freebie to encourage people to join the survey.
2. Send a “break up email.” Don't delete all the cold emails right off the bat! Give your audience one last chance to keep hearing from you by sending a re-engagement email. A “break-up” email invites your subscriber to “break up” if they are bored or to re-engage if they wish to continue.
To do so, send a broadcast email to all your cold subscribers with a strong call-to-action, such as clicking on a link to confirm that they still want to hear from you. This might be enough to reactivate some of the cold subscribers. With ConvertKit, you can set up automation (tutorial here) that removes subscribers from the cold subscriber list when they click on this link.
3. Consider cutting down on your emails. Email marketing can be convenient, fun, and addictive. It's easy to get overly enthusiastic and start sending emails a bit too frequently. Your subscribers might not be keen to open your emails if you send too many repetitive emails.
So, if you find that your emails are going unopened, think about slowing down temporarily. Send less frequent emails to give your audience a break. Alternatively, offer your subscribers a choice of email frequency, so they can decide if they want to hear from you once a month or once a week.
4. Avoid spam filters. This could be a reason your emails are going unopened – they are getting filtered out and being sent to the ‘Spam’ folder. It’s such a shame for the email you spent time crafting to be sent to spam. Make sure this does not happen by avoiding the use of spam trigger words such as ‘cash,’ ‘cheap,’ ‘double your income.’ Spam filters also tend to filter out emails with lots of attachments, exclamation points, and too many images.
5. Prune your email list once you have made several attempts to re-engage, whether through improved content, surveys, or re-engagement emails. Some cold subscribers might just come back to life! However, some inactive subscribers will remain zombies. At this point, consider pruning your email list and removing people who are no longer an active part of your audience. This way, your emails and freebies will go to people who genuinely want to hear from you. If your subscriber list shrinks a lot, you might even be able to downgrade whatever email list management software you are using. On ConvertKit, you can downgrade to a cheaper plan.
To recap, we have talked about large email lists, using software to manage them, and working with cold subscribers. Especially if you have an extensive email list, set aside time to maintain it, a healthy email list will go a long way towards building the audience of your dreams.
Tips and Frequently Asked Questions
Content creators, this blog post is for you! We have gathered some of the most frequently asked questions we get and tips to help in your content creation process.
Email marketing has been shown to get higher deliverability and open rates than any other marketing channel. A well-crafted email can be opened more than 50 times and still have a great click-through rate. With that said, readers will only open your emails if they find the content interesting and valuable.
The email marketing industry has been around for a long time; in fact, prospects like it more than social media. Email marketing is the most effective advertising channel for ROI according to 96%. No other channel comes close. Marketers also believe it's a top performer on return on investment with 83% stating it was impactful. It's no wonder then that email is the #1 priority of marketers (and has been for years) and receives more than half of all budgets.
Buying an email list is a quick way to ruin your reputation. Email subscribers will most likely spam your emails, which may flag to the email platform (e.g., Google) and place you on a blacklist. Don’t do that.
Other risks involved acquiring an email list, such as reaching spam traps, abandoned emails, and reaching an unreceptive audience.
Here is what you can do… list rent. You can have your message sent from a company/sender that discloses that the email is from a third party (that’s you). If someone chooses to unsubscribe, it will be from their list, not yours. When done correctly, renting a list can be mutually beneficial to the guest and host. You, as the guest, can have your content pushed out to a captive audience. The host also wins by providing resources to its audience.
Great start! Take a look at your home page. Does it look appealing? Can a first-time visitor/a stranger navigate it? Count the number of times you have a newsletter form.
Successful websites are usually limited to scrolling up and down (not side-to-side). Optimize your website to be user friendly for guests accessing on the computer. If your website is spread out, it may be difficult for someone to stay long enough to be captivated. On that note, optimize your website layout for mobile devices. Smartphones and tablets are everywhere these days; your site visitor is likely on a mobile device.
Find ways to embed your newsletter form on your home page and other relevant pages such as your about me and resource page. If you have a viral blog post, add a form there too. More forms increase the chances of someone subscribing to your newsletter.
Everybody has something to say, even if you initially feel like you don’t. Find your inner voice by looking at your blog and your brand. Ask yourself questions such as what inspired you to start your blog and the lessons you have learned in your blogging journey. People want to hear your authentic thoughts.
An excellent place to start is by sharing your story and your motivation, thus encouraging your audience to feel a connection with you. It shows them why you are different from every other blogger out there. If you still struggle to find something to say, reflect on your passion, skills, and credentials. The most successful people often incorporate all three.
You have opportunities to connect with your audience when they
*Sign-up for your newsletter
*Buy a service or product.
*Announce a service or product
Take those opportunities to make a connection.
To stay connected with your audience, consider writing an email for blog post notifications. You may also consider adding emails to engage your audience. Think about these topics.
*Showcase your top pins for the month and analyze why some pins worked
*Showcase your freebie
*Ten things blogger don’t tell you about starting a blog.
*Top 5 blog posts for beauty bloggers
Have you noticed your followers unsubscribing? It’s tough, but don’t feel disheartened. Unsubscribes are just part and parcel of having a mailing list. As a content creator, you can take a few steps to reduce the number of unsubscribes. These depend on the reason people are unsubscribing.
The number one reason people unsubscribe from a newsletter is too many emails. With different social media platforms, news sites, and work projects, your subscribers will probably receive countless emails every day. The last thing you want to do is to be an annoyance. So, get to know your audience and measure how many emails are enough in a given period.
Apart from frequency, the content is just as important. Think ‘quality over quantity.’ Create exciting and creative emails for campaigns and promotional emails. Importantly, balance out any promotional emails with high-value blog content emails that do not try to sell anything. Always remember, the most important thing you are building is trust.
The third factor to look at is design. If your emails do not load properly on mobile devices, this could be causing people to unsubscribe. If your emails are image-heavy, optimize them to load fast with slow connections or small screens.
TIP: Text-based emails outperform images or templates.
ANSWER: 8, if you are John Meese.
John Meese started his business by answering questions on forums. He eventually built a course answering all the problems he had received. He emailed his 250 subscribers, and eight emails later, he generated $10,000 in 7 days.
Let’s look closer at John Meese. He offered his subscribers help with a specific WordPress theme. Since he had already built an established course for this theme, he knew what he was talking about and had the credentials to offer advice. He had used the theme himself and personally found it clunky, so he had the first-hand experience of what his audience wanted to know.
As you can see, emails can be an excellent way to create income and establish your brand. There is no magic trick, but the key is to offer high-value emails about a subject you are knowledgeable about and passionate about. Your audience needs to want what you are offering.
