Are you struggling with writing concise and engaging articles? Can’t avoid typos no matter how hard you try? Grammarly may be the answer to your writing woes. This article talks about the pros and cons of Grammarly, how it can make you a better writer, and the different pricing plans.

When I first started blogging, I had to develop my writing skills. I have to learn how to write lengthy and comprehensive articles. My writing needed to have flow and a particular style. Plus, my second language is English. All of this combined meant multiple reviews and drafts.

I stumbled across Grammarly one day while writing multiple emails. I kept re-reading my emails but somehow felt that my writing poorly conveyed my message. And then I thought to myself, “there has to be a better way to do this!” Afterward, I decided to give Grammarly a try and have used it ever since.

Like most people, I tend to think faster than I speak or write. As a result, putting my thoughts into words can be tricky at times. Grammarly helps me with this. It prompts me to edit my work with punctuation and word choices that enable my writing to be easily understood. In short, it’s a comprehensive writing tool that aims for brilliant writing.

Before we get started, make sure to sign up for my newsletter and get tons of tips and tricks to boost your blogging business.

I now use Grammarly for all aspects of writing. Whether I am crafting a social media post, drafting an email, or creating content for a blog post, Grammarly gives me the confidence to send a message in real-time!

What is Grammarly?

In 2020, Grammarly boasted over 7 million daily users! So there is a good chance that you already know a fair amount about this hugely popular app. Just in case you haven’t heard of Grammarly, let’s take a look at what it is.

In a nutshell, Grammarly is a digital writing tool that aims to improve and elevate a piece of writing. It does more than detect typos. Grammarly also picks up on grammatical issues, punctuation mistakes, word choices, writing style, sentence construction, and plagiarism. It’s an all-in-one editor/proofreader in digital form. Think of it as your creative writing instructor who gives you more than just writing feedback.

Instant Spelling And Grammar Checker

To achieve all of this magic, Grammarly uses artificial intelligence to boost its algorithms. The suggestions are context-specific, and a description accompanies the reasoning behind every recommendation on the paid plans.

Grammarly’s AI-powered applications help people communicate more effectively. Millions of users rely on Grammarly every day to make their messages, documents, and social media posts clear, mistake-free, and impactful.

Plus, Grammarly is not limited to the website. This digital writing tool covers you from every angle. Its robust application allows users to use the platform on a desktop, tablet, iPad, and even your phone. Yes, you read the right. Mobile writing no longer has to be difficult with a checker like Grammarly. You can also proofread your Word documents or PowerPoint by downloading the app and use it on Microsoft Office.

I love using Grammarly with Google platforms such as Gmail and Docs. It provides me feedback to improve my writing. When using Grammarly, I can quickly change the target and audience to fit my writing style. For example, when writing an informative email for my day job, I often select “email,” “confident,” and “informative.” While blogging, “casual,” “friendly,” and “tell a story” are my usual choices.

Why use Grammarly’s writing tool?

There are several reasons to choose Grammarly as your writing tool. Here are my top three reasons.

Intelligent grammar and proofing suggestions.

Grammarly enhances writing with grammar, spelling, and punctuation corrections. But what truly makes this digital tool intelligent is its AI algorithm. The AI algorithms are continually improving themselves in your favor. Users are encouraged to use the “ignore” button to help Grammarly get smarter when suggestions are not helpful. That way, the algorithm learns your style and can suggest more relevant changes.

Excellent for audience growth.

Next, Grammarly is suitable for your SEO ranking. Grammarly’s extensive reach supports your blogging business’s growth by optimizing its conversion rate and keeping visitors on the site longer.  Research by Global Lingo  showed that “74% of consumers notice spelling mistakes on a website or marketing materials, and 59% said they wouldn’t use the services or buy the products from that company.”

For your existing readers, Grammarly can do wonders to improve their user experience. Encouraging users to continue to engage with content on your website is mainly fueled by reading ease. If it is easy and enjoyable to read, a reader will continue reading. Proper grammar and correct spelling encourage potential subscribers to stay on the website and engage.

Produce easy-to-read and well-written content.

While commonly used writing tools such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs will point out spelling mistakes while writing (if enabled), Grammarly is a tad more powerful than those. Sticking to the fundamental error detection offered by Microsoft Word or Google docs will give you a theoretically correct document. However, it may not be easy to read, and there may be plagiarism issues left undetected. Grammarly will catch errors and suggest words or even ways to make your work comprehensive when it comes to proofing.

Grammarly is a Must-Have Tool for All Bloggers

As a blogger, conveying an idea through text is the bedrock of your work. A single blog post can range from 300 to 5,000 words. In general, blogs have upwards of 100 blog posts each (however, each blog varies in the number of posts). Do the math, and you will see that there are a lot of words, a lot of writing, and with that, a whole lot of possible errors. Proofing all of this content manually would be laborious and time-consuming. And who has time for all that?

Thankfully, Grammarly can successfully handle any length of writing. Large blocks of text are no problem for the editor. Its seamless and minimalistic look allows Grammarly to suggest as you write with gentle prompts.

As part of Grammarly’s support, a blogger can opt to access more suggestions by clicking on the bottom arrow or circle containing the letter “G.” This gives you more tips that you can use to improve your writing further. Clicking on the circle prompts a sidebar to appear beside your writing, emphasizing correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery. Otherwise, clearing errors suggested by underlines will decrease the number shown on the bottom right corner of your screen.

Editing your written content is much simpler with Grammarly. It’s an online grammar checker that frees your first draft from any spelling or structural mistakes. . This way, you can spend more time editing and proofreading to truly improve your writing and get your message across.

How Grammarly works

Grammarly displays the number of suggested corrections on the screen while writing. One step at a time, it guides you to fix any mistakes by explaining each error and offering a solution in many instances. Of course, it’s up to you to ignore or adapt the changes suggested by Grammarly. Everything is still under your control.

Apart from misspellings, grammatical errors, and punctuation, Grammarly looks out for plagiarism. The tool will suggest citations to incorporate into your writing if it detects plagiarism. In addition to misspellings and plagiarism detection, Grammarly offers synonym suggestions to avoid repetition of words.

Plagiarism Detector

The plagiarism detector is one of my favorite features of Grammarly. These days, there is a lot of content on the Internet. Due to the amount of research needed to write a blog post, plagiarism is inevitable even when we don’t consciously intend to plagiarise.

Plagiarism is when you use someone else’s content without attributing the content to its original creator. Grammarly’s plagiarism checker detects plagiarism from both web pages and academic articles. If your content needs citations, Grammarly helps you credit the correct sources appropriately.

As a content creator, it is best to avoid plagiarism. How else can you establish yourself?  Unique content that offers something new to the audience is always the best. Grammarly checks for plagiarism in writing. As a blogger, this is a great feature that gives other writers credit when plagiarism is detected.

Pros and Cons of Grammarly

Like any software, Grammarly has its upsides and downsides. Here is a balanced view of what you can expect while using Grammarly, starting with the pros.

Grammarly Pros:

High Accuracy. Grammarly thrives with accuracy. Its software detects grammar errors while writing, allowing little room for you to commit them. It goes a step further by explaining each suggestion and, in many cases, offers a solution.

To access Grammarly recommendations, you can enable “quick view” or see more Grammarly recommendations with complete explanations for each suggestion.

Extensive Customization. Grammarly can customize each piece of writing according to the audience, style, domain, tone, and intent. Customize your dictionary with brand names and acronyms. The more you use Grammarly, the more you can truly make it yours.

Widely applicable. You can use Grammarly everywhere. The phone app supports both iOS and Android with a Grammarly keyboard.

On a desktop, Grammarly offers extensions and applications that work with Google, Microsoft, and more.

Basically, as a writing tool, Grammarly has one of the broadest coverage. Its grammar checking tools are all you need when writing. Once you try Grammarly, it’s challenging to live without it!

Comprehensive English language support. Are you concerned about spelling variations between British and American English? Don’t be, because Grammarly can detect nuances for four different English versions (American, British, Canadian, and Australian). Targeting your writing allows you to create content that will genuinely appeal to your target audience, wherever they may be.

User-friendly. Let’s be honest. Some apps may work great in the end, but they are a pain to use and an even more significant pain to learn as you get started. That is not the case with Grammarly. This digital writing assistant is easy to use, quick to set up, and highly user-friendly.

Grammarly Cons:

Limitations with the free plan. Using Grammarly’s free plan allows you to take advantage of spelling and grammatical error correction. Paid plans give you students access to writing on multiple platforms such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and your phone.

Not completely perfect. Even with Grammarly, certain types of content might still benefit from a human proofreader. One way to produce fantastic writing is to combine the two. Use Grammarly and hire a human editor.

As you can see from the list above, the pros of using Grammarly outweigh the cons. For an accurate and customizable digital writing assistant that comes in an easy-to-use package, Grammarly is unbeatable.

How Much Do I Need to Pay for Grammarly?

Grammarly offers three plans to choose from – free, premium, and business.

The free plan includes suggestions to improve basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Tone detection is limited, and the types of recommendations are basic. It’s not much, but it may be enough for you. Since it is free, there is no risk in merely trying it out for yourself. If it turns out to be insufficient, upgrading to Premium is a breeze.

Payments for the Premium plan can be made monthly or quarterly, with monthly payments at $29.95 per month and quarterly payments of $19.98 per month. It states that Premium plans start at $11.66 per month at the bottom of the plans page. The premium plan is limited to one user.

Business plans can start from 1 user to upwards of 150, with discounts for teams larger than ten members. If you are looking to use Grammarly for many writers, the business plan is the way forward. Payments for business plans offer annual or monthly plans. Business plans start at $12.50 per month for a yearly membership and $25 per month for a monthly membership.

Do note that Grammarly offers special pricing for accounts with an “@edu.” For one member, plans start at $139.95 per year.

Like 95% of people who choose to use the free version of Grammarly, I used the free plan for a long time. Eventually, I decided to upgrade to a premium plan after needing additional support on various platforms. Now that I’m on the premium plan, I’m on the premium plan. I fell in love even more and truly enjoy the extra features it gives me.

Grammarly: Free vs. Premium

You might be wondering, is the premium plan worth it? Well, it depends on your needs.

The free plan is essential. It provides access to conciseness and tone detection on restricted sites. Grammarly’s free plan supports writers with critical error detection, including grammar suggestions, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. It does not cover plagiarism checking or any features that truly elevate your writing, such as tone or word choice.

Grammarly’s Premium plan includes everything the free plan offers plus a whole lot more! Paying for the premium gives you access to advanced suggestions, fluency checking, formatting, clarity-focused sentence rewrites, compelling vocabulary, deliverability, and plagiarism detection on all sites. Depending on your content, the extras offered by the premium plan can push your piece of writing from ‘good’ to ‘great.’

In short, unless all you need is an essential spell checker, the premium plan is likely to be worth it. It has the AI algorithm features that genuinely make Grammarly unique. Getting Grammarly Premium’s initial investment will pay off as your improved content converts more site visitors into customers.
